"I will save the third glass for after we return," Senecio smiled. "This trip sound much more alluring. Yes, I think the embers are just right..." he said and put the potatoes on them, burying them in the hot coals with a poker.

Tide looked at him, and sat down quietly again.
" That was my idea... Only thing that we need to figure out is transport to there. " he repeated the thought out loud, voicing his concern. " demon whispered. " It takes two hours... When you're a waterbender, and can glide across ocean. It would be easy for me, but it will be harder with passenger. Usually I'd transform into some doglike form that people can ride on.. But I am hurt now, and if I walked like that, my hand would hurt. This human form where my hands are free works best for me. " he whispered, seeming rather timid. " Piggyback ride to island... It would work best for me, so I can focus only on gliding across water, and so I can watch stars, too, while I run along surface of sea. You are an actor. If you could pretend it's not embarrassing, I think I could pretend it's not embarrassing, too... "

"We could do that, or we could just take a boat," Senecio suggested.

" There are lot of reasons why it would not work. One is that Hans does not let me own my own boat. I keep braking fragile things when I get too excited, and after tenth time, buying boats just to have then sink to bottom of sea is bad investment.... Long story. And we can not take someone else's boat - it would be stealing. Stealing is awful and rude. " Tide said simply, as if it was inconceivable in his mind, to do such a thing. " Besides, Hans has eyes everywhere, at every dock, and I am memorable sight. He would notice. You are not exactly... Sneaking out type, are you? You are theatrical, proud, walking in on front door, for all to notice... Sneaking out is, um... more like, trying not to have anyone see you... you know... so you wouldn't get caught. Hans would not agree, with me leading you out, like this. If he caught us, I would have to let you stay here, with some guard, and you don't seem like you'd want that. I prefer not to get caught by Hans by going out on some theatrical way - his scoldings are the worst. "

"We could take my boat then," Senecio offered. "I don't care if we break it."

" Is it far? And is it really yours? Not borrowed from someone, or such? " Tide inquired, seeming uncomfortable to ask, but determinate with his condition. " I would prefer that, if it's yours. Only if it's like that - if it's not yours, but something you stole to sneak in here, I can not sail it. "

"You think an actor can't afford a boat?" Senecio chuckled. "It's mine, I used to far enough from people on it when learning a new role. It's in the mouth of the creek that flows into the sea right behind the city."

" I think using your own boat as escape plan is highly suspicious, that's all.... But you didn't really plan this to succeed, so I guess I could trust you on this. " Tide nodded slowly. " Alright then, we will use boat. But we need to get to it, and I planned on jump out of the window, one long one - from here, straight to the sea. It's easier way, to sneak out of here - one moment you're here, and next, you're on free ocean. You'll still have to hold tight for that one, but for the rest of the trip, we can use the boat. How long until potatoes are ready? I will get a basket from the shelf so we can use it to store potatoes, and some leftover from dinner and some bread and drinks, too. "

"It wasn't an escape plan, I always keep it there," Senecio explained. "And it should take about fifteen or twenty minutes for the potatoes to be ready. If we wrap them in something while still hot, they should be still warm in two hours."

" That is good. " Tide nodded, and fell quiet. " It means we still have twenty minutes to kill. " he managed to smile a little as if at some joke, thought it more seemed to be felt in the air that he smiled, as his face was covered with a mask.

" I do not go to plays. When I tried to come to them a few times, everyone kept staring at me, instead of at stage, despite my friends tried to make it less so. It was very uncomfortable. I felt it was not worth it.  So... I have literally no idea what plays are those. " Tide admitted. " It doesn't have to be something famous. Just tell me something nice. There must be, somewhere among all those merchants and princes, just some character that is gentle, kind, and playful. When I read the books, those are my favorite ones. " Tide requested hopefully. " I like simple, gentle and soft things. It can be overly dramatic, if you like, or just a whisper, out of any context. Just kill the time with something soulful, please. I am in pain, and I'd just like to hear some nice words tonight. "

"Nice words? Then I know what I will tell you... Flinding's confession of love." He smiled a little and closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, they were soft and dreamy like those of a young lover. He knelt and extended his hand toward the demon.

"Of all my loves this is the first and last
That in the autumn of my years has grown,
A secret fern, a violet in the grass,
A final leaf where all the rest are gone.
Would that I could give all and more, my life,
My world, my thoughts, my arms, my breath, my future,
My love eternal, endless, infinite, yet brief,
As all loves are and hopes, though they endure.
You are my sun and stars, my night, my day,
My seasons, summer, winter, my sweet spring,
My autumn song, the church in which I pray,
My land and ocean, all that the earth can bring
Of glory and of sustenance, all that might be divine,
My alpha and my omega, and all that was ever mine."

Tide seemed caught of guard, dumbfounded by the warmth and softness of the words, caught into a pretense, frowning at extended hand, wondering what to do with it. It was good he had a mask this once, as he seemed quite frozen in embarrassment - if embarrassment could kill, well, he'd be on a good way to his grave.
" You... You are a good actor... But you hardly killed more than one minute with that... You really are a bad assassin... Heh... " he cleared his throat, trying to find words that were stuck in his throat. " I... I am sorry... I don't really like it. Those are some very big words. It seems a sin, to use them for a monologue in a play. They are too big words, to be spoken but for entertainment... " he shook his head. " I am sorry... But I liked your previous act better. Just a dear guest, glad to see me. I preferred the way you looked at me in that role... You are a good actor... But there is something in how demons perceive feelings, you see... " he added more quiet and withdrawn in his shyness. " You yet would have to learn, how to say such huge words with such passion, to make earth tremble and ocean foam, to make grown people shed tears. Such passionate words and sight without passionate heart... It is... uncomfortable for a demon. I preferred the way you looked at me before. " he admitted. " It was more warm and sincere. I guess I like warmth and sincerity, a bit more than.. um.. such words... "

Senecio got up, and looked at Tide a bit sadly. "But they are not just for entertainment," he said quietly. "It's real. It doesn't matter that Flinding and Gwendelyn are just fictional characters. Their love is real. It lives in the mind of every spectator that I manage to draw into the tale. I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you. I don't just act, it feels more like becoming the character. If the words of my Flinding can't make the earth tremble and sea foam, then maybe he just doesn't know such love yet..."

" Love is the most beautiful and profound feeling.  " Tide whispered quietly." Everyone can act out anger, because everyone felt anger, but it takes special bond for someone to experience the true love. That is one thing that can not be faked under skilled Nove of muscles chisled into a smile. " He shook his head, looking aside embarassingly, before adding quietly, all flustered. " Um, you need to work on that... you are not that bad, don't think that. The earth did not tremble, but... my heart did. That is precisely why I don't like it. " he said simply and firmly. " That moment belongs to Flinding and Gwendellyn, not me. We are both intruders in it, you, who do not love, and me, who isn't loved. I have waited my whole life, to hear such profound words. I am hopeles romantic, after all. The books of love and happy endings, love poetry? I read hundreds on them.  " He admitted freely, although timidly. " But I did not want it, like this. That's why I love books. Those words are too sacred.. Too sacred to say out loud, if they are not meant. You can not say someone is your everything, if you never met someone for whom you would trlyly sacrifice your everything. Love is profound, yet feverish, passionate. "   he noted with little sad smile. " If only my heart as my, an audience, is trembling, and not your own, you are not doing it right. Love is a thrill that makes it hard to speak. You learned your lines well. You never teared up, your voice was never hoarse, you did not even stutter. You do not know how much loving someone to stars and back, really is. It is very far. You get your heart charred there and back again, while you grow soft and sweet from within. You get back from its heights like charred potatoes. "

"Have you known such love?" Senecio asked quietly. "And if not, how do you know that it really feels like that? I never felt like what you describe. If it really feels like you say, I wish I could know it. But it's too late now, I guess... Sorry for the choice, I really like that part of Flinding's monologue, and I thought you might enjoy it."

" I used to be Many Demons, not One. You could say I am a fusion... Of thousands of little primordial souls, all melted into a pot till they became one. You are human. I do not expect you to understand how that feels... " critter whispered. " None the less... I am One, but coming from many still has influence over what I am now. You could say... I am a bit of meld of all their interests and attractions... That said... Many people I find attractive... Ahem... Meaning... I fall in love way too easily, I think. I am rather... soft hearted. I love very fervently and deeply, like demons do... And it's not like only romantic love is like that. All love that is really passionate is. I feel such way, of my friends, too. Love does not have to be romantic to be intimate. Sometimes, I can just sit and think of them, and my heart wants to bursts from joy of having them and loving them. My heart is a charred potato, ugly to look at, but baked to softness under flames of their love. " he smiled little shyly, as if he really liked the comparison for some reason. " Thank you... For trying to find something you thought I might enjoy, though. You are sincere in that claim, I can feel. That is enough for me, to be content. I am pleased when other try to return my kindness with kindness of their own. It is only fair. "

"I am also a fusion of all the characters I play," Senecio said. "I can't describe it otherwise. I sometimes don't know if what I feel comes from myself or from some of them, but I don't know if it actually matters. I learned to be careful with the roles I pick, if I can afford picking them."

Critter nodded a little, slowly and thoughtfully.
" I see.. " critter nodded slowly. " In this particular case, we should set a boundary, though. " he said then, seeming very keen on being clear with how he wants to be treated. " I don't like to be told words not meant for me. It feels like intrusion on my privacy. But I don't want to interfere with your wish to be kind. It is something you should keep, no matter what character it comes from. I have it within me, too, as legacy of many souls I've devoured, and something I need to honor to exist contently in this world. " he smiled a bit thoughtfully. " If it's not too rude to ask, while we wait for potatoes, I would like to hear more segments from roles you really, really like. That would make me content. " he said simply and straightforwardly. " I just ask you, not to tell them to me, like this last time. Imagine there is some character beside you, to whom you speak. You are an actor, you can do that. Recite the words, like poem. " he set condition. "  It doesn't mean I am not curious about your art. Show me what you like.. I seek to understand. I just want all the words you say to me, to be solely and exclusively words meant for me, not for someone else - that is all, please. "

Tide slowly relaxed with that - seeming to be able to enjoy himself more, when he could imagine someone else on other end of the line, and not be caught in the middle of love confession act. Slowly, his shyness melted, and he just observed the lad, quietly absorbing his words like a sponge and pondering of them, with time, getting lost in it, and seeming to unwittingly really start enjoying himself, with such endless wide range of characters Senecio knew to bring to life so skillfully.

It was an unexpected turn of events, braking out of character like that, and crying out for potatoes getting burned, as if they were people in terrible danger, as if loss of them would be terrible loss upon the world. It seemed to be irretrievably, despicably adorable act to Tide, and just as funny.
" If I didn't know any better, I'd say you found your true love just there! " demon exclaimed, as he suddenly started laughing way you would never expect a demon to laugh, snickering like a little boy while observing lad's desperate attempt to save the food. " Don't try to hide it, there was more passion and warmth in those few words, than in whole Flinding's song, ha! " he could not help but tease, seeming  quite thoroughly entertained by to him unexpected, and overbearingly dramatic treating of potatoes.

Tide's laugh was contagious, and Senecio snickered as well, and played along with the role that Tide gave him. "Come, my love, I shall make it up from you for my neglect..." he spoke to the potatoes.
