"Oh, I know, and he also wants to check the shop with ropes, Senecio grinned. "I just thought he might be back for lunch. I will write a list of all characters, and numbers of statists, okay?"

" Oh, that shop is seperate thing altogether - more tied to pleasure than romance. We are speaking Tideish, and that's language of romance, so you know that's not only thing he would do and call it a day. ." he teased him with raised eyrbrows ." Let's just say I don't want you to strain much to save energy for later, that you shouldn't look through window at garden not to spoil surprise, and that I didn't tell you anything. " Spirit said innocently, and looked down, starting writing, not giving anything more away.

" Naturally. Of course I didn't tell you anything, for why would I possibly want you to know you have something to look forward to in evening? " Hans smiled, only very lightly, but for first time, his sad smile seemed to have reached his eyes a little bit. " I am sure you will find utmost boredom in work, since you obviously have nothing to look forward to once it's done, right? "

" Well, somebody has to do it, so better you than me. " Hans teased with a little bit of satisfaction, knowing his job, although hard as it was, is at least more interesting - and with it, he started writing, the very first chapter of their reinvented play.

While Hans was writing the first scene that wasn't in the old script, and so didn't need it as a reference, Senecio took it and started systematically making a list of all characters that appear in the play. Then he arranged them by the importance of their role, putting Death on the top with some satisfaction, and started writing suggestions of actors next to the characters - just one name for some, or more suggestions for others, some circled, but in a quite different sense from Hans' list. "Don't mistake the lists, or we are in big trouble..." he remarked wryly when he noticed that.

" I won't, don't worry, I have much better handwriting." Hans grinned at him, giving him a little tease. " By the way..." He said, as he seemed to be a little slow with this part of job, slowly getting a taste for it. " I am writing healing scene where Death treats two Spirits that got into a quarel... But I was trying to figure out how to incorporate those Spirits later on, and it seemed too lazy of a choice to use them now and then never." He admitted. " I have an idea... and it may be a little crazy, but I really like it, and I wish you to hear me out on it, to tell me honestly if you think it would be good choice or not. "

" Okay, I was thinking about balance - on side of Spirit court, we have sympathetic characters of Female Spirit messenger, and of Fairy Queen to develop. On Demon Court, we have two demon friends, that are at that time happy, before war. It's a good balance to give both sides someone to root for... So I was thinking, we don't need to throw in random two Spirits in first scene, but we need someone who audience can connect with for later in play.. And then it feel on my mind - maybe we can use precisely this as strong introductory scene for two demon friends too. Death didn't make such distinctions, in old times. Before wars, he tended to all of us equally, no matter fact his tastes were preferred at Spirit side. " Hans whispered. " We can use that even as opportunity to right away establish there are differences between demons and spirits, but that they didn't matter to Death as time, because he just loved helping so much. Demons are generally more strong and playful, maybe they were good friends, but were too rough in a play and got injured and angry at each other, but with Death's healing and kind words of reassurance and encouragement to mend harsh words said and make up, they were reminded why they like each other in first place, and we can see Death's positive influence. When Spirit Messanger comes, then it makes bigger impact when Death refuses to go to Spirit court right away, because he is helping two Demons, who are not his kin, but still it is more important that any fun he can have instead. That way, all characters are introduced much sooner, right away, and have more personal bond with each other. We can also add more logic to it - maybe it were two demon friends that while being healed, bid Death to send Spirit Messenger further, to Grendel, to tell him news, so demons can know too of it, and only because of it, Death dares burden kind Spirit Messanger to it. That would tie lot of things together. That way, we can more subtly later show how happy two demons are and how good influence that was on them, seeing them jolly, as they made up, in later scenes in Demon Court. Besides... Um... I was also thinking about end, while considering this. " he admitted with little blush. " I thought it would give two demons stronger relation to Death, and act as very good foreshadowing. I like to tie in beginning and end... And what would show better, change in Death, than this? At first, he is healing two demons, just because he thinks they are people, flawed, perhaps, but that can be pushed in right direction, and with his kindness, without realising it, he actually pushes them in just that right directions... But in end, he is healing the exact two critters, but turning them both to Spirits, erasing all they are, going to that extreme, because he believes it to be best now, seeking a world without pain, coming closer to world with much less flavor and richness.... He is not painted right or claimed bad for doing either, he is just painted as doing what he sees best. " he gulped, as this was, really, too close to home for him. " It's just that we all have to make choices, and he made his. The play starts with two demons being healed and positively influenced by his warmth and kindness.. It ends with those two demons, one now spirit, being victims of the war, and having Death be healing them anew, this time to turn them Sprits, to blank sheets. He erasing all they all, to render them harmless, taking as priority safely of all, over personality and well being of few, opposite to start, when he was trying to help every individual, no matter how flawed, in hopes they can be helped and do better. We would go full circle. "

Senecio put everything aside and closed his eyes for a while, imagining it. "The symmetry of the beginning of the end would be really poignant," he said. "It will be a powerful story." Then he opened his eyes, and nodded. "Good, let's do it that way. But when I imagine that strong, bittersweet ending, I just can't imagine that people will be in a mood to dance at a ball afterwards. We will need to tie on it slowly and very tactfully."

" Yes, I agree... I really put a downer on the end. But it is written as unsuspecting tragedy, so I can't help it... And it is a tragedy, when you think about it - that full healing comes only with full oblivion, that you're only free as blank sheet. But I'd rather suffer forever as me, than ever be free from pain, you know? But that is pretty much demon's view, in the point of things... " Hans murmured, thinking of it. " I don't want to remove strong ending, just to make people want to have fun more. But I would not like to give depression to everyone, Demons, Spirits and Humans alike.. " he smiled a bit. " Do you think there's something we can do, to make the end a little sweeter? My original plan was to respect and keep all sadness of it, but to end on something that leaves sweeter taste in your mouth - not random jolly moment, but more like something that leaves you suddenly inspired, hopeful, and happy to be alive still, to leave you feeling that despite ill circumstances there is still something to look forward to in future to come, and rejoice in the present. Do you think there's still a chance for something like that... " he sighed sadly. " Anything that will, preferably, not have everyone end in tears and so on? "

"No, I would leave the ending as it is," Senecio shook his head. "It is too poignant to change anything about it. What I would change is the beginning of the ball. It is a custom to start with a dance, but maybe not this time. That beginning should tie on to that sadness, and give it that feeling that there is still something to look forward to in future, and rejoice in the present. Do you have some idea how to do that?"

Hans suddenly smiled a little cunningly, rubbing his hands, as if something fell right into his alley.
" Well, I don't know... " he said slowly, as if tasting the idea. " But you said all famous musicians we can get will get solo performance, right? But it doesn't mean their solo performances have to be first thing of evening.... " he grinned a little bit, as he imagined something. " I don't want to impose myself. I want no glory, and I want not to steal their stage, and I don't like anymore, playing such powerful things myself, for the crowds - it is personal to me. But I could compose a piece for our musicians - one last piece, for ball opening performance, where they will join in song, for one last time, to mark end of their work on our play, as they will only work on premiere play. It can be song dedicated to meadow king, to convince them to agree, perhaps, but song far away from desire to just placate king - instead, a song of power. Imagine, opening act, not being a dance, but a piece of music, a song to but listen to... That starts of slowly, tying in on sadness, but then brightening it up, making it faster, giving it beat, filling it with hope, wonder, and joy of being alive. Soothing their raw hearts, and bringing them new hope, and desire to live out the night, the life, to the fullest, to make merry and to dance away their troubles and pain away. " he grinned little softly. " Could you imagine that? Would that be alright? "

"I can imagine it," Senecio nodded. "Played with muted lights, only a few floating candles reflecting on the water in big bowls with flowers under the surface..."

" Hey, mentioning lights... The five Spirits I told you about, that are experts on building things with it... " Hans whispered then, as it gave him idea. " As we are organizing ball as well - do you think it would be better choice than just having candles, if they make some simple glowing light decorations for Ballroom? Some simple, soothingly glistening things, to make it more, let's say, romantic? " he remarked almost silently, innocently, even in this, seeming to take Tide's bigger interest into account, even if this was something he wished to do for sake of all Beings he cared of that will come to performance as well. " I think I'd prefer that, that is safer, than just some flammable candles, that could catch something on fire... It would be more pleasing and special. "

"For the dancing," Senecio nodded. "But there is something contemplative about looking into the flame of a candle, especially reflected in water. I would keep it that simple for the song."

" I didn't have Ball in plan, so I didn't buy the Ballroom, I admit. " Hans shrugged helplessly. " Since it's not in center of our interest, I admit I wouldn't go out to make such big purchase just yet, before we see how we are handling the whole theather thing and we get better hang of it. But I know the owner - very fine and sophisticated noblewoman. Sage knows her as well. I think I'll have Sage do negotiations with her, so set it all up. Through him, we can only make sure our suggestions are as well met as possible, so theme of the Ball is as respected. There's just too much to organize - band, reception, food, drinks, and so on... I trust Sage to do it better than I, with my divided attention, would. "

" That's what I am saying - too many things would come up, that would sidetrack us - and what would be point of good ball, if we wouldn't have time to make as good play as we want to? We need to give our full attention to the play, and if w follow timetable, we can do this.  " Hans nodded in agreement. " I prefer it, like this... It.. Turned out quite well, actually. Two of us can focus on the play, to make it good for Tide, and Sage can also take part in our project and treat him with something fun and delightful, without having to meet up with you or talk to you at all. This arrangement pleases me. "

Hans could feel that something was unsaid, and while not as reserved and passive as he was this morning, it still seemed to leave him somewhat tense, as he was naturally sensitive to those kind of things, and it was like a itch he couldn't scratch.
" Yes..? " he was one who couldn't keep himself from commenting a little impatiently. " You have a voice, do you not? What is it that you want to say? "

"Do you really have to hear any stupid remark that I think is better to keep to myself?" Senecio sighed. "I was wondering if you mind working with me like Sage would... And I did not want to say it, for the record."
