"Hm. Does the effect depend on doze or does it only influence the duration?" Svarik asked. "I would prefer to not use more of it than necessary."
Administrator
" When in lower doses, it influences effects, too. " Emmet replied truthfully, appearing thoughtful. " How long do you think cutting would take? It is generally only important that I am not resisting it and pulling away, right? Then we could maybe use half a spoon. It wouldn't be enough to paralyze me fully, and my muscles would be contracting a little with insufficient dose, but I'd not have enough control in them to resist substantially - mostly shake my head or fingers a bit, but not be able to do much... it is sort of state similar to when the bigger doses would be wearing off. " he whispered. " Doesn't really look that great, but I would feel better not wasting too much of your time, too... "
Administrator
"I'm not concerned about wasting my time but about you being unable to communicate," Svarik muttered. "I would prefer a smaller dose because it seems a bit unnecessary combined with the painkiller."
Administrator
" Either way, it's hard to tell if it's better to be able to move a little or not at all. Sometimes it's worse to have a feeling you could almost move away... but can't. I am a little too biased right now to weight out two similar lesser evils, though. " the boy whispered, though he sounded, above all else, little embarrassed suddenly. " I'd prefer to get this done quickly, to be able to work sooner, and... to see if the new hand will really work as it should. No offence, I wouldn't go along with all this if I didn't think it would, but it's different to think a plan sound right and to see it worked. I... can not describe this feeling properly. It is not fear, but not nervousness either... anticipation, maybe... "
Administrator
Svarik nodded. "We will go with bigger dose of painkiller and smaller one of paralysing potion. Just don't look at the knife and you won't even know when to jerk away."

" Okay... I will try to stay still, though, so I don't make your work harder... " the boy smiled shyly.
Janus was quiet during the exchange, listening attentively as if trying his best to leave them space to decide without bias and to figure out social cues of the conversation, and when he could join. " One more thing... About the place of the operation... I... think I would like to make an offer. If you think it is wise, and if Emil agrees, of course. " he said at that moment, glancing shortly over kids, before looking back at Svarik, with a plea for advice in his timid gaze. " When I asked Emmet where we should do this, he said he'd be more comfortable where no one can see he's struggling... so either at the room assigned to us in human theatre or here. But I wouldn't... like the kids back there.... and here is not exactly too cheerful place either, not to speak sanitised. " he gulped. " I didn't really want to do this early... To bring three children to a pocket dimension, where only I can bring people in and out... it is not right. It is too much power. But this would not be me, bringing three little kids into a pocket dimension. With two responsible adults with me, healer and a bodyguard opposed to me, I feel it is less improper of me to offer this... " |
Administrator
"That depends entirely on Emmet," Svarik said. "I am not opposed to it. It's a very suitable space." |
Administrator
" Alright.... so, what do you say, Emmet the apprentice? " Janus asked quietly. " It is true only I am able to allow ins and outs, but we'd only stay as long as our guests remain with us. There are no strings attached. "
The boy thought for a moment, as it was a rather unexpected, unusual request. " There seems to be a lot about you that I do not know... But I am pretty certain leading us to a secluded location for any reason is last of what you would find comfortable, right? You would certainly not be so tense asking about it otherwise... " " I just dislike the power that the invitation implies. " Creature whispered. " It is too much power for a stranger. " " You don't have to justify yourself. " Emmet shook his head. " I just have to ask... before I accept or not, is this pocket dimension some private place of yours? I wouldn't want to intrude. Also, if it's a closed room with no windows, if it wouldn't offend you, pocket dimensions sound interesting, but I wouldn't like to get a panic attack. " " It is not a windowless room. " Being readily reassured. " It, you can say, are remnants of a temple. My temple, actually, as I used to be an Elder God, and once my main temple got abandoned after some war of the iron age or so, I just packed it up with me... It is not... technically Theft. I see it as preservation. " he said shyly. " So, it is a sentimental place, but it is also spacious, with endless sun, where it is always warm. It is not cold, like this basement, Emmet... It is just my little packed up workshop... " " I didn't know you can just pack up a place and carry it with you... " the boy said, looking at the creature with new wonder, trying not to sound too eager, where his curiosity did get better of him, and he seemed genuinely interested. " I guess it would be nice to see it if everyone thinks it's suitable... " |
Administrator
"I have seen it and find it very suitable," Svarik said. "We just need to get the painkiller. Could we send someone for it?" |
Administrator
" I do not wish to trouble Rain anew. There are children at the theatre they're working to guard, and I can not distract his work now that time for their designated practice is nearing. " Being sighed, looking thoughtful. " Hmm... I guess people at healing quarters might have already gotten used to seeing Beings in the last few days. It is best that... I go... "
" Don't, please. It was my fault... You sent me for the painkiller, but I got the paralyzing potion. " Emmet bit his lip, pleading hopefully. " You hate being around so many people, and I should fix my mistake... " Being grimaced with the plea, not sure how to evade the direct request. " Please, do not plea me for that... It is not safe for you. " he whispered. " It is an objectively better choice that I go obtain it... " " How about I go? " sir Falcon casually threw himself in the middle of their discussion, giving them a third option. " Svarik can go with you and the kids and you can prepare everything, and I'll be probably back before you finish even sightseeing through the pocket dimension, even." " Oh... I guess that would be more helpful. As long as you're back soon. " Being raised his eyebrow, looking more closely at Conrad, as, until this point, he seemed to mostly filter his out, talking instead to Svarik that was more easy to trust. " Are you sure you are alright with being troubled with this? I feel bad enough host, putting you through all this, without a proper reward in exchange. I asked Svarik what he would like, but what about you? What do you hope to gain from this? " " I want what Svarik wants, with just a bit of world peace sprinkled on top. " Falcon snorted a little bit, watching the demon calmly, but not without some interest through his narrowed eyelids, adding in playful acknowledgement. " Unlike Svarik, I won't act like your abilities are not a big deal - but I actually really do not think big military advances are the highlight of your abilities that I am interested in. " " That's ... wait... what is my highlight, then? " Being, while wincing a little at the mention of his military ties, couldn't help but taste the unexpected word sourly. " Why would I want a more destructive way to shoot people, when I can get an insanely well-working leg or a limb for someone that has none? " Falcon half-smiled. " I mean no disrespect. I shall go get this painkiller to you for nothing. But I was thinking about what you said when you agreed to accept to help us in future - and if my acts still place me in your favour, I know what I will plea from you. I have a colleague, Mole, a member of my Council of Seven. He is a dancer and a flute player and has lost a leg recently. So, you can say I'm not opposed to getting in your favour... " " That's... a crude way to put it.... but I appreciate your honesty. " Being, easily distracted, scratched his head. " So, that would be all you'd be content with? Time delivery depends on the complexity you want, but... it sounds rather unpleasant to be a dancer with your crude human prosthetics. The calculated act or not - you offered to do this for me, and you played with the children and kept them safe while I was away twice now. It isn't about what is done, it is about how important it is to someone, and it is important to me. " he said simply. " It is a noble reward to ask, and if you will still want it by then, you may have it... " |
Administrator
"I would be thankful for that too," Svarik nodded. "Mole is not just a great dancer, but is beloved by many, including myself." |
Administrator
" I am not really calmed by that argument - bad people can be beloved, too... " Being waved away his hand firmly. " No - I am more reassured because I doubt giving a dancer the ability to dance again can impact the world for the worse," he said, as after being a key part in advancing technology of human war terribly at one point, lot of creature's reasoning seemed intent on not repeating the same. " I hope so, at least. He is going to be a member of whatever Council you mention whether he has a leg or not, I presume, so whatever kindness I do for him, it will hardly change his heart for the worse. "
" More so benefit his heart. In all honestly, a good exercise is important for humans, so in fact, giving him the ability to walk easier will hopefully enable him to be active again and extend his life for longer. He is a chill person none the less - I don't ask you yet. You can decide when you meet him, and only once you are surely doing so won't make the world worse. " " I do not wish for it to be a slippery slope - but I never had people I make deals with, the way you say, end with the short end of the stick. " Being decided, and glanced at Svarik solemnly. " I may be expressing my concerns, as I dislike pretensions - but when all is said and done, if you respect what lies on my heart I will respect what is on yours. I trade respect for respect, a show of trust for trust. Treat my apprentices honourably and with full heart, to the best of your abilities, and I shall build new leg for your friend, not on account of what it means to the world or his life - but on account that he is dear to you. " |
Administrator
"Thank you," Svarik smiled. "But let us wait with any promises until you actually meet Mole. Today I would like to focus on Emmet fully. If Conrad would be so kind to get us that painkiller, maybe you could give Emmet a tour of the place where we are going to do the procedure in the meantime and I would also like to prepare everything." |
Administrator
" Yes, let us make haste. Alright, younglings, you heard what I told the-- healer and his kind bodyguard. " he turned to the children. " I asked your elder, but you should choose too - do you wish to follow us there? "
" We want to be there for Emmet. " younger one's heart didn't skip a beat, and the middle nodded slowly. " Any place is okay, as long as it is clean... " he whispered, confirming too. " It's arranged, then. " creature gulped, timid, as it didn't seem to anticipate to offer such a thing so early, but felt like it was the only proper choice. He took out the key to the basement, and carefully laid it on a table in front of him, so Falcon could pick it up. " Entrance to the dimension is in my bag, as you know... but I don't like leaving it just anywhere, at anyone's sight. We'll enter the dimension here, just lock the door of the basement behind yourself, and when you get back do the same before entering the bag, dear guest... " " Alright, got it, anything else? " " Anything else? Hmm... " Janus thought to himself, turning a bit to address Svarik while taking his bag from the side, and unlocking it slowly. " Your friend will get us the painkiller... is there anything else he should get you to make sure your time is well prepared? Any other herbs and medicines for the children? " he asked a little embarrassed. " I do not... know how the convention goes, I fear. For myself, I usually just wait, but I realize it is not the most... practical solution for humans... " |
Administrator
"I will use healing magic, so no medicines are needed. But a calming tea might be good for everyone, actually," Svarik said. |
Administrator
" I will bring the most badass tea to do the job, then. " Falcon gave Svarik a thumb up, and left, closing the door behind him.
In contrast, once he was sure they were as safe as possible to do this, Being carefully opened the bag and put it on a floor. " Alright, little ones... I'll walk in first, and you and mister Svarik may follow behind me. Are you ready? " The children nodded, and Janus nodded back, copying the gesture in a try to communicate reassurance to them. He then stepped toward the bag, stepping into it as if there were invisible stairs descending down, and one by one, their hearts determined, but tense with such a strange entrance, everyone followed into the unknown. |

Svarik has already been there and so he focused on reassuring the kids rather than the surroundings as Janus showed it to them.

At first indeed, the reassurance was well needed, as despite everything, being led to a secluded location by men they barely knew must have been pretty triggering, especially for younger ones.
But even as they were entering, Emmet, who grew to trust Janus a bit more, was free enough to show his awe. He was admiring and soaking up everything, enjoying the warmth of the sun, flooding Janus with endless questions, of how the artificial light works, how can it be so warm, how borders to dimension are wide... Janus was surprised, but it couldn't be hidden that the unexpected appreciation pleased him, and despite he looked tired and feeble, there was new light relit in his eyes as he was explaining the best he could. His explanations were incomprehensible, of course, but still clearly interesting to listen to for the awed young man. Distracted by insatiable curiousity, it was clear Emnet in love with the place, and with his reaction and Svarik's reassurance, younglings began to relax a little too, although only slowly and hesitantly. |
Administrator
"So which room do you find most suitable for us?" Svarik asked when the kids seemed more comfortable about the place. "I would like to prepare everything." |
Administrator
" Let's see... Let us pick somewhere peaceful and quiet... Hmm, lot of the rooms are adjusted for my work, tools and storage - its primary function is as my giant laboratory, for every kind of experiments and things I make... " he was explaining and was about to add something when he noticed that Emmet appeared more awed with that. The boy blushed when he had seen the creature was looking at him.
" So... it's not just a place you liked from the past and preserved... but an actual... laboratory? With lots of different tools and mechanisms inside? " he asked shyly, and when Being nodded, he was encouraged to ask, inquiring innocently. " I think... I'd feel pretty comfortable having some interesting things around me to distract me... " Finally, Being chuckled a little with the unexpected request, its chuckle faint and hoarse, but bemused genuinely, shaking his head. " Your efforts to gain insight... are good and acknowledged. But a lot of these rooms only have chairs and armchairs, no beds, and have some dangerous tools. I never had to... childproof them. I would rather make sure you shall be able to rest comfortably on the bed. But I can't disregard rewarding your enthusiasm... How about I promise to add that reward to our list? " he suggested then. " When you earn enough points from learning mechanics, I'll see what I can show you that is appropriate to your skill level. Only if we can find the adults to accompany us, though... " "That sounds good. " a smile beamed upon Emmet's face, as he didn't dare dream for such promise. " I'll learn, I'll learn fast, you'll see! I, I want to see more. Until then, any room is okay. I'd be comfortable with any pick you find appropriate... " " I do not sleep, so I only have two rooms with beds. " Being admitted, and glanced at Svarik. " One you already know, little one. The one where we were yesterday, when... making deal with Hans. But is it restful enough? The bad isn't for more than one person, as I never make group deals. My personal room is the one where we let Senecio and Hans sleep in yesterday... The good thing about it that bed is very large and spacious, enough for a couple people if needed, and very soft. To my liking, it is better, and it is secluded but open, too. " he gulped, explaining his hesitancy. " It is just, little one... You will know better. I feel it would look bed to invite people into my private room, but... I do not really even sleep there. I just like the concept of having a bedroom... " |

"I would actually prefer an armchair to bed," Svarik said. "One with cusions for support that can recline so that the hand can rest on a table. A table that should be perfectly clean. Can something like that be arranged?" |
Administrator
" Hmm... It isn't exactly a common armchair of human standards, but I have a work chair with a mechanism by me and furnished by Alpha Centauri that can recline to different angles. I am tall so it is big enough to be an armchair. " Being offered. " It is made of the softness of wet grass and has that exquisite smell of earth after rain. I.. like the scent. " Janus replied thoughtfully. " The table... Let's see... if sterility is important, I do have one room in mind. It has an appearance of an observatory, with blinds that can be opened or closed on command - but the windows themselves are never opened. It is the room where I do my optics research and production. When making special products like mirrors that communicate on distance, it is extremely important that not an atom is misplaced, and no dust interferes. I doubt a clearer room exists in your... human kingdom. I purge it regularly so no bacterial microscopic creatures degrade the quality of my products. We can bring whatever else we want to it, I'll clean it later. "

"That sounds like exactly what we need," Svarik said. "But we need to wash before entering the room. Is there a place to do it?" " Do you need to wash for some... religious reasons or medical reasons? " Being asked discretely. " I do not really like baths, so there are pools of water around, and in my private chambers, but I choose them for the sound - I am satisfied with the sound of running water of fountains, so I've learned to build some, " he explained. " I keep everything clean because I prefer it so, so if you wish to take a bath, there's plenty of places to pick from. Or is it just hands and surface area of the skin, like hands and such? If so, I have storage of disinfection potions that are much better than using mere drinking water. I use it mostly for clearing tools these days - as for cells, I have in my spare time recently developed a machine that can purge certain bacterial and dirt residue of the surface of furr and hands. " he frowned a little as he explained. " I like to exist in material form - but having micro bacteria and dirt of human world touching me around and layering on top of me? Quite a repelling feeling... "

"That would be perfect," Svarik said. "It's theoretically not necessary with magical healing, but it's much smoother when it's all clean."
