"And I thought I had problems..." Senecio muttered. "This sounds like the world is going to end or something... Heh, if it does, at least I won't miss much. So you are going to send this Nameless the shell-flute?"

" Yes. As a gift. So he can play with it for his beloved ancestor. " demon nodded quietly. " I do not want this world to end lke this. I adore and love it so deeply..  I wish it to continue being, even, perhaps, if it means it may continue being without me. I guess... this shell is one way I feel I may be able to chip in, to add bit bigger odds to all their efforts to save him, at capital. Even little difference may be enough in the final weighing. "

" Yes, I give it to the king, to pass it on. But that does not guarantee questions won't be asked. This is too rare item to just randomly show up. Sooner or later, and more likely sooner, Death wil learn of me." He shook his head sadly." And when he does... I can only hope one- that my demise may be quick, or so I am daring to hope. I really hope I may get him at least just enough busy with kiling me, so that my friends may flee... but of nothing, I am certain. "

"So you actually expect to be executed as well? What a coindicence... Sorry, I didn't mean it in a bad way, it's just funny that we ended together. Don't you have some nice suicide mission for me as well? One that actually helps someone?"

" I am sorry... I didn't really think of it like that. But I guess... If you didn't indulge in your strange suicide  mission, you would not be here. If you wouldn't be here, I wouldn't have someone to talk to right now, to share those terrible lingering doubts..." critter whispered quietly, and then it smiled a bit. " I would hate, coming here on my own, having no distraction from my nearing demise. If it's for any consolation, at least you are helping me... "

" Too many to put on your shoulder alone. " Demon took a dep breath. " But I guess... I am fearful of what is to come. I am questioningly, if what I do is necalessary. If there is any chance I could not get involved..  but in my heart, I know there is no chance I would stay aside, you know? But I still can't help washing I wouldn't have to.."

"If it's any comfort," Senecio said, lying down on the sand with his hands under his head to look at the stars more comfortably, "after you actually do it, you will have no more doubts, just this wonderful sense of freedom. Short-lived, but freedom still..."

" I don't think it will be like that, for me. I will do this, so I do not regret not doing it... But I am not sure it would give me much freedom. " critter admitted, looking up at the beautiful comforting stars as well. " It is easier to you, I think. You only have yourself, to worry about. iIt's easier, when you're only dooming yourself. I feel like I am betraying my friends, by insisting on doing this, so petuliantly... I fear I might endanger them, but still, I can't help but do this, for the world we love so dearly. When time for dying comes, I think I will probably die worrying, and being super tense and panicking, hoping my friends are safe, but not really knowing. I admit I am afraid... I feel it will be a rather unpleasant death. "

" I guessed that much. You put on a friendly face when dealing with people, but never allowed yourself to indulge in closeness with them. That's why I found you so pitiful. I'd never be able to live like that. Your life would be a hell for me. " Demon admitted, simply, straightforwardly as ever. " I guess that's why I pittied you enough.. To decide to collab with you tonight, as a friend, taking out a friend, on the trip across the sea, for a stargazing calm... " he said thoughtfully, leaning comfortably on one rock aside, so he could watch the sky better, too. " Little kindness wouldn't kill me, I knew... And nobody deserves to spend his last hours alone, friendness. Maybe it will be your last hours, maybe not, but it is not on me to chose that, only to chose if I wanted to keep you company or not, and it was easy enough choice to make. "

" Well, um, I tried really hard, so, you're welcome, anyway, I guess... " Tide nodded slowly, not really sure if he should take actor's words as compliment or instead a comment on his *nice* enough, but lack of excellent service. " I fear I am not too good at that acting it, but at least I put an honest effort to indulge you, so, there you go. Your told me about the play truthfully, too, so I guess it'd be about time if I return you the same measure and honor our deal. " he said then, managing a faint weak smile. " So, want to hear more about the shell flute and how it does what it does? If you do, I'll try to explain it to you best.  "

" Thank you for the patience. " Tide nodded a little. He paused for a moment, thinking of right words. He carefully and solemnly left flute shell aside, on its cloth, while he took couple potatoes from their backpack, and his hands started glowing lightly, as he started baking them for Senecio and himself. " I think best way for you to understand what it does, is to explain to you, what kind of creature was this little Shell Being, before it perished. " he said quietly in the end, and continued speaking, as if telling a tale, with his soft, little sad voice. " They were beautiful, and their bodies had lot of lovely elegant little tentacles, peeking out from their shells, and they were pure white, transparent, with glowing bits around them. They evolved alongside early Beings, and were parasitic lifeforms, parasiting on both Spirits and Demons. They would chose a host they really liked, and they would crawl to their body, and use their mushy transparent tentacles to connect with their host's body, preferably nerve system, but whatever was available worked. Through it, though, they would not touch your nerves, but they had some strange inconceivable way of somehow binding themselves straight to someone's soul, feeding on aura soul is manifesting. Now, that's very invasive process, normally, something reaching into your soul - but these creatures, having to parasite like that to survive, have evolved some very peculiar way to make their hosts want to keep them, and want their touch, instead of want to get rid of it. " Tide paused, before continuing slowly. " When they bind with you... It's as if they become extension of you. They don't... didn't feel like strain objects. But there was more. As soon as they bind with you, they would start balancing out imbalances within your soul and body, in order to strengthen your aura, so they would be able to use it to its utmost potential. It was evolving for their own benefit, to evolve to benefit their host's auras. Their parasiting could bring relief from pains of souls, and cure many illnesses of it and body. Hosts and parasites would soon start, instead, a symbiotic relationship, for benefit of both, and many were friends to each other. This shell, that you see - it was a parasite that had chosen Turtle demon for his host, and they became great friends, until its untimely death in war, when it died, trying all its best to make him live. " he sighed. " All that they were doing, now lost to the world... It was balancing out auras, soothing souls, and more famous that anything, there was the pleasure. " his voice trembled bit. " It wasn't always overwhelming, of course. There was always a lingering scent of pleasure and calm in your soul, yes, from Shell critters balancing out imbalances within you, for your soul being taken care of. But sometimes, when host would be relaxing and parasite could reach into his soul just right, it would bring a gratifying  blinding wave of bliss, so strong, that I heard it was making even most terrifying primordial creatures moved to tears and unable to speak. As time passed, many stopped looking at little shells as parasites... It was a privilege, to offer your soul to one, and considered grace from their side, when they would chose weakened critters to parasite on, and they were considered healers, tenders, good doers. They could bring Beings close to corruption back to health. They were called "Chinmayi", word that on Spirit language means *bliss givers*. "

" Because.. they decided to take demon's side in a war. A terrible mistake was what cost them so dearly. They did  not agree with Death's choice. They felt it would only leave the world less colorful, more barren and flawed. " Tide said gravely. " They have mental links with one another, and they counseled, and decided that demons were in the right, and no war was right if it was led to eradicate a whole one kind of life of earth. They did not want to support such cause, and side that took it upon itself to decide, what is pure, and what is too filthy to have right to exist.  They were between demons and spirits, but they chose to fight, for us, with all their might, hoping to even out the odds for us. And they were powerful allies. " his voice trembled for a moment, before he gulped, and slowly continued, with great heavy burden upon his words. " With their enhancing of demonic aura and power, demons were even winning at one point, however briefly. Spirits sow there was a threat to their side, and as they sow it, they had no other choice... And so, they set of to kill them, once and for all. Whole one magnificent specie, gone... Because they chose to help us, to side with us, instead of with a winning side. In folklore and memories of all demon kin that lived, they are creatures held in high memory, with utmost respect to their nobleness and sacrifice. You could say they, too, chose a suicide mission, to fight for what they believed was right. "

" And, even worse, all that sacrifice, for whom? " Tide sighed. " For that very enemy, that started a war, that ended his brother's life. " he shook his head. " It saddened me to ask this from him, but it is my general policy, to not blame children from crimes of their parents. That little lord Nameless, I heard, cares deeply about Death, so there's gotta be something in that wretched soul, worth saving. That is why I found courage to ask for such precious thing, for sake of saving of our world. Salvation of world.. That is what Chinmayi, that valued all life, would have wanted, or so I want to believe. "

Tide was quiet for a while. He was just looking at the stars, and baking their potatoes in silence.
" I have seen many useless, pointless death in this world. I am a little tired, you know, from all of that. I could prevent some, of course, but not nearly as much death and suffering as I wanted. " he admitted, avoiding his gaze. " Your death... It would be most pointless to me. You did wrong, but not wrong enough to deserve death, by my opinion. I know law is on their side, and treason is grave... But I told you. I have faith in this new king. He seems different, truly, from those before him. I am going to plead to him, for your life, in the morning. " he said, simply, straightforwardly, without any dramatically an actor would use for it - just sharing his feelings simply, as they are. " If he is as good as he is, he will hear me out, at least. Originally, I planned to give this shell instrument to him freely, with no change. But I am thinking about seeing if I could negotiate with it, even a little, for your life. Please, do not raise your hopes too high... I do not know the future. But I will try, at least, to buy of your life. You are still quite young, and I hate pointless deaths. You should not end, like this empty shell. "

" Do not say such awful things. Death is so final, while life is, on the contrary, full of possibilities. " Tide just shrugged a little. " If you live, there'll be enough time to decide what to do. I won't pamper you much - I am just telling you this in time, to not give up hope, but also, not raise your hopes up too much. I will give my best, but if I can not soften king's heart for you, I fear my hands will be tied and I won't go against his final word. I do too think justice is due, for horrible thing you did, and I can not let you off the hook completely. You hurt Lorenzo's feelings, and you broke Sage's heart when he thought his son is a blackmailer and murderer, and you hurt my feelings as well, when you made me fret for life of my nephew. You should pay for that. " Demon said firmly. " Only not, with your life. Your ancestors.... They were in some ways quite bad, but not evil people. They did fight their wars, and they did own my friend as slave... But they also allowed me to buy him off from their possession with my gold and set him free. They let him live a free man, however brief that time was, until Empire conquered them. They were not evil in every way, nobody is. But you should not die for their long lost glory. You should live to make your own, and leave world a bit better of that you found it. "
